You may have heard a lot about the health benefits of drinking tea, but how do you sort out the fact from the fiction?
Let’s take a look at oolong/wulong tea and the many ways that it can benefit your health…
There are three primary kinds of tea: green tea, black tea, and oolong tea. Each kind of tea comes from the same plant, and is processed differently to create the different varieties.
About Wulong Tea:
Wulong tea is another name for oolong, which is a semi-fermeted tea. This means that it falls in between black and green tea in the way that the leaves are treated after picking.
As with black and green tea, wulong tea has a host of health benefits when consumed regularly. These benefits are for the most part because of the naturally high level of antioxidants in the tea.
What are antioxidants?
According to WebMD, “They are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals.”
This is important, because free radical damage is linked to many common chronic diseases and compromised immunity.
Health Benefits:
- Healthy Skin: In this study, patients suffering from eczema show great skin improvement in only a week after drinking 3 cups of wulong tea 3 times per day. Also, by protecting skin from free radical damage, this tea can can be useful in preventing some signs of aging.
- Healthy Teeth and Bones: The antioxidants in wulong tea have been shown to help prevent tooth decay and also to improve bone structure and support bone health.
- Heart Disease: In a study published in 2010, it was concluded that consumption of wulong tea may reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Tea may also have a beneficial effect of helping to regulate cholesterol.
- Diabetes: There is emerging evidence that, when used in combination with standard care, oolong tea may work to naturally balance blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Preventing Ovarian Cancer: A promising recent study showed that, ““regular drinking of green tea, black tea and/or oolong tea was associated with a lower risk of ovarian cancer, the adjusted odds ratio being 0.29 [95 per cent confidence interval 0.22–0.39] after accounting for confounding factors”.
Weight Loss:
Another one of the recognized health benefits of wulong tea is weight loss.
It’s true…the same powerful antioxidants that are responsible for it’s other health benefits also work in the body to fuel up fat burning.
These specific antioxidants, known as polyphenols, raise the body’s metabolism and help to block fat-builiding enzymes.
A 2001 study published in the Journal of Nutrition concluded that drinking regular amounts of oolong tea not only raised metabolic rate, but also increased fat oxidation in its subjects. In all, this study showed a 12% increase in fat oxidation over a 24-hour period after drinking the tea, and an overall increase in energy expenditure (metabolism).
Another study published in 2009 in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine reflected the same results when researching the use of oolong tea with overweight and obese subjects. They found that Oolong tea could both decrease body fat content and reduce body weight through improving metabolism and that it might help to prevent obesity.
Wulong Tea for Your Health?
With all of the potential benefits that you can gain from wulong tea, it seems like a great way to support overall health.
It is completely natural, and as with healthy eating, may be a simple way to help prevent disease and create optimal well-being.
