Icky Substance I Just Found In My "Whole Foods" Salad…
Ugh…
I have to go to the grocery store this weekend and I’m TOTALLY dreading it.
Does your head spin when you read food labels?
So does mine.
In fact, I stopped reading food labels a couple years ago when I stopped shopping in the aisles and began buying only whole, unpackaged, unprocessed foods.
However, I have gone BACK to reading labels as I found out recently that my Whole Foods prepared foods were loaded with icky chemicals I don’t want to go anywhere near!
BEWARE: even if you spend half your paycheck in Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or another awesome ‘healthy foods’ retailer…
… There are still sneaky chemicals in some of the foods you may be taking home.

There Was Definitely No Chicken in My Chicken Salad…
My husband and I love chicken, tuna, and egg salads. When we make them at home we use greek yogurt or even hummus instead of mayonnaise, because we generally try to avoid canola oil. (more on that in a moment.)
But the last time I went to Whole Foods, I noticed a beautiful ‘Blackened Chicken Salad’ for sale with beautiful carrots, green onion, and even cayenne spice.
When I got home, I noticed that the chicken salad was no chicken salad at all: it was made with SOY nuggets – not chicken.
What’s the big deal?
I try to avoid soy for a variety of reasons.
Here are the top SEVEN…
1. Soy Makes You Girly…
Soy has a bad rep for making girly men…
Yep, it’s believed to even cause gynecomastia (man boobs) in men.
It is believed that soy can also potentially promote hormonal cancers in some people.

2. It Affects Your Thyroid…
Soy negatively affects our thyroid gland.
The thyroid’s purpose is to create, store, and release thyroid hormones into your blood.
It helps control your body’s functions… and with too little thyroid hormone in your blood, your body actually slows down.
3. GMO’s. Need I Say More?
Probably not… but I’ll go on…
90% of the soy sold for consumption contains GMO’s.
You can hardly avoid soy-derived GMO’s!
They’re found in salad dressings via soybean oil. They’re also found in commercial baked goods, like bread or cookies in the form of soy flour.
4. Soybeans Have Enzyme Inhibitors
This may harm your body’s ability to digest proteins.
In fact, soy is linked to digestive problems, including amino acid deficiency.

5. Soy Is High In Phytates…
Phytic acid BLOCKS your body’s ability to absorb minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc.
Phytates also are linked to mineral deficiencies in many countries.
You shouldn’t have this problem with tempeh due to it’s fermentation process; but you should definitely avoid soymilk, fake soy products (like my “mock” chicken) and tofu.
6. Avoid Processed Foods…
Most soy requires tons of processing, including pressure and heat, in order to make it edible.
This also makes it hard to digest.
This may be the reason many people are allergic to soy; it’s actually a really allergenic food!
Soy milk is the worst. They’re soaked in a chemical that produces the carcinogen “lysinealine”.
BEWARE: if you have children, baby formulas are often made with soy protein isolate; which is riddled with chemicals and may be bad for digestion, as well.
7. Soy Is Hard to Digest
Oxalates and lectins in soy both make it hard to digest.
Oxalates may even cause kidney stones: one of the most painful things in the world if you ask anybody who’s had them!
Lectins are even scarier: they may cause clotting of red blood cells and immunologic problems.
I have devoted my life to helping YOU make wise decisions for your body…
And your families.

Hi Stephanie~
Thanks for the reminder that one still has to read labels- even at `healthy’ stores! I also think it’s a good `warning’ for me as we’re supposed to get a Whole Foods opening here in my town soon- so, I won’t get lazy myself w/label-reading.
I was wondering what you thought about organic soy milk? I’ve been using it in my home-made lattes ? Is that soy, too, still heavily processed?
I’m excited to try my 1st batch of Wu-Long!
Thanks.
Stephanie
Hi Mary! I avoid soy that isn’t fermented. Soy sauce, for instance, is fermented. Whereas soy milk is not. It’s a really hard call because soy milk is delicious in chai lattes 😉 I generally trust Dr. Mercola (though he can be a bit dramatic sometimes and it’s good to do your own research ALONGSIDE his very hard-hitting conclusions so that you can make your own judgements) and here’s a very succinct article I recommend: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/09/18/soy-can-damage-your-health.aspx Keep in touch, Mary! Let me know how Wu-Long works for you! In Gratitude, Stephanie

Thanks Stephanie,
I was having a problem opening the link and at first thought it was my computer. This is an exceptional article as Whole Foods, a very good business, still needs to be monitored when it comes to prepared foods.
Soy, along with low and non-fat dairy, is a widely accepted myth that is not necessarily healthy and can do damage.
Thanks for keeping up the alerts!
Stephanie
Nancy, thanks for touching base 😉 Can you believe some of the items that are still in WHole Foods prepared cases? Soy, canola oil, and added sugar are just a few. In my original research I was going to name 5 different ones – and still may do that with some more research. However I’m really hoping that Whole Foods gets more strict with their ingredients. I believe that it will behoove them because people who care about their health WILL pay the extra $1.00 or two for clean foods. Thanks for letting me know the link had a problem, by the way. Keep in touch!!

Wow.Whew. Anaphylactic to soybean oil..WH prepared always looks so tempting and healthy. But when eaten it causes heartburn and GERD symptoms and never tastes as good as it looks. Now we know why. Almost all of restaurant cooking oil is vegetable blend and includes soybean oil no wonder millions of people have heartburn and gerd and they are blaming it on certain foods also soybean is cheap so prepared foods and restaurants like to use it to save a few dollars..what a terrible thing they are doing to our nation’s people..soybean is really bad..
