The World's #1 Silent Killer… (not what you think!)
When I was a child, our television flashed images of starving children all over the world.
Their gaunt little faces and toothpick arms haunted my childhood, and I spent some time in my 20’s in ministry to underprivileged people in the U.S. and the world.
Soon after I left ministry, a new image of what underprivileged looked like stood in my mind: rather than a gaunt, emaciated, starving person…
I now saw the ‘poor’ as being overweight, diabetic, and very sick.
Now that developing countries have access to processed foods… and much more than they need; they’re becoming obese.
As it turns out… this may be the world’s new silent killer. I’ll explain why.
A Growing Epidemic…
When you see people who are overweight, you intuitively know that they are sick.
But did you know that the number of obese people in developing countries has tripled in the past 30 years?
Even countries like Mexico, hailed for it’s plethora of natural resources, now has the highest percentage of obese adults in the world.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, even Chinese adults have been stricken with an alarming 12% diabetes rate
Some say that the plague of obesity in Mexico and China may be, in fact, due to their ‘healthier’ economies in the past few decades.
Why Are People Overweight In Developing Countries…
Why are so many people overweight in developing countries where- just 30 years ago – they were starving?
Well, for one, industrialization begets more time sitting and eating fatty, sugary foods.
And less time putting in physical labor to burn those extra calories!
What’s even crazier?
The UN’s #1 Millennium Development Goals was to stop extreme hunger and poverty.
But what we’ve now realized is that far more people die worldwide not from poverty or malnutrition, but from the four major global NCD’s, or “non-communicable diseases”.
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Lung Disease
One of the primary risk factors for the world’s greatest cause of premature death? Obesity.
That’s why I’ve dubbed obesity as the world’s #1 Silent Killer.
Problems Caused By The Worldwide Obesity Epidemic…
The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) recently published a report suggesting that more fat, sugar, meat, and portion sizes are what’s leading to this obesity epidemic.
And the burden people put on public healthcare systems is growing in proportion with our global waistline.
A researcher from the ODI claims that if people continue to eat like people in the US or UK do, “…we would need several planets to cope with the consequences.”
Some even call the epidemic “over-nutrition”. I don’t really like to think that we can have too much nutrition. I rather think of it as over-MAL-nutrition.
Other experts might call it “wheat belly” or “sugar overload”.
Whether it’s wheat, sugar, fat, or meat consumption… something “big” is happening in our world, and it’s contributing to the #1 reason for premature death worldwide.
Scary Facts About Childhood Obesity…
There’s nothing more sad than seeing a young child’s life consumed with being overweight, or even diabetic.
The American Center for Disease Control reports the following:
- Obesity in children aged 6-11 has DOUBLED in the past 30 years.
- Adolescent obesity (age 12-19) has QUADRUPLED in the past 30 years.
- Childhood obesity increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012.
- Adolescent obesity increased from 5% to nearly 21% from 1980 to 2012.
- In 2012, more than 1 out of three children & adolescents were overweight or obese.
Why Policymakers Don’t Talk About The World’s #1 Killer…
Policymakers, non-profits, and rockstar charitable organizations don’t usually focus on malnutrition and obesity.
This may be because the fight against HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis are a bit more sensational.
But if people aren’t going to willingly wake up to the obesity epidemic, do policymakers intervene?
It’s hard to suggest policy around something so personal as food and diet, so that doesn’t seem plausible either.
So where is the hope in this matter?
Well, here are two examples of countries successfully fighting the obesity epidemic.
1. In South Korea, aggressive social marketing and education has prevented this nation from the obesity epidemic.
2. Finland went from having the world’s highest coronary mortality rate to a decrease by 65% when they worked with the World Health Organization to promote healthier diets and lifestyles.
There’s really no way to tell if the obesity epidemic will have a natural correction, just as any global market…
… Or if it’s a problem serious enough that policymakers will have to step in before it gets much worse…
What Can YOU Do To Fight Obesity In Your Family…
There are a lot of things you can do to fight obesity one very special person at a time… with your own family.
Here are my top 7 suggestions for you.
1. Start A Garden…
It’s very exciting to grow your own veggies, herbs, or even raise chickens!
Plus, you aren’t likely to pile fresh basil or zucchinis on top of cheesy nachos; taking care of a garden often causes you to eat healthier, whole foods!
2. Go To A Farmers’ Market…
If you don’t have the yard, or the time for a garden, you can take advantage of others’.
You’ll notice that the artisans and farmers are more than eager to tell you about why their food is nutritious, and delicious.
Plus, food at farmers’ markets are often some of the healthiest, more purely organic foods you can find!
When you hunt, pick, or grow your own food, you learn to appreciate where your food comes from.
Plus, foraging for food guarantees that it’s not-processed!
4. Shop The Perimeter…
Just don’t go outside of the perimeter.
Make a game of it. Challenge yourself to only shop for whole foods without boxes, jars, bottles, or plastics of any kind.
It’s fun to try to replace sugar or candied fruits with whole foods, fruits, or other creative things.
Plus, if your family doesn’t see the Breyer’s Ice Cream or Cheeri-O’s, they’re less likely to crave them.
5. Learn To Cook Your Favorite Meal…
Meal planning is awesome… but it takes a *lot* of discipline!
One thing that can be incredibly helpful is to learn how to cook your favorite meal in a healthy way with no processed foods, 100% organic, and ideally low in sugar and carbs.
I learned that my husband and I can make a healthy bone-brother soup (with Slimming Tea!) that lasts us all week long.
We cook it Sunday and all week long we make vegetable purees, soups, and even drinks with it!

6. Food Prep…
Food prep is WAY easier than meal-planning!
Every weekend I buy cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, carrots, and tons of delicious hummus.
I clean the veggies and put them in containers in my fridge.
Then all week long I go for healthy foods as opposed to quick, salty, carb-laden processed chips or snacks.
One of my personal tricks is to have things i love to snack on ready at all times.
I always have a fresh back of air-popped popcorn for when I’m desperate for something salty, and I love to munch on belgium endives late at night when I get a snack-attack.
7. Always Keep Iced Tea In The Fridge…
Seriously – kids (and husbands) don’t always prefer hot tea like I do.
But they seem to love iced drinks!
That’s why I always keep a huge pitcher of iced Slimming Tea in my refrigerator.
Sometimes I add berries, other times I add lemon and Stevia to make it taste like an Arnold Palmer!
Lately I love to add cucumbers, but when my friends young children are over I add oranges and berries to make it look really appealing to kids.
Slimming Tea is one of the most natural, healthy, and easiest ways to fight obesity and help you crave the RIGHT foods.
Slimming Tea only has about 1/3rd the caffeine of a cup of coffee…
And it’s infinitely better for you and your family than sodas, or even bottled beverages that are marketed as ‘health drinks’.
