Fitness Tips for Reluctant Exercisers

Fitness tips for reluctant exercisers
It’s true; I used to be a reluctant exerciser.
I thought it was too expensive, too boring, too intimidating, and too hard to make time for.
But the thing is, I knew that it was good for me, and I also knew that when I actually did it I felt awesome afterward.
Just as it helped me to eat healthier when I stopped thinking of it as “dieting,” it really helped me to engage in more physical activity when I stopped thinking of it as “exercising.”
Now it has become a regular part of my routine and something that I actually even look forward to. Well, at least sometimes.
If you are having a hard time finding the motivation to get started (or stay started), here are some of my favorite tips…

Set Goals:

Setting goals can be a very important part of finding motivation to get fit, rather than just doing it with no real intention in mind. A great way to sets goals for yourself is to use the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting system. This acronym stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant/realistic, and time-bound. Focus on Results:

Once you have set your goal, hang onto it as your motivation and don’t lose sight of why fitness is important to you. Whether it is losing weight, toning up, relieving stress, or one of the many other benefits that come from being active. Just as with positive visualization, focusing on results helps you to achieve your goals.

Mix it Up:

I really enjoy walking on the treadmill, but if I did nothing but walk on a treadmill week after week, I would get bored out of my mind. Exercise does not have to be just one thing. If you mix up your routine you are less likely to get bored and more likely to stick with it. Bonus: changing up your routine will challenge your body in new and different ways, and can improve fitness faster.

Make it Fit:

I am not a fan of gyms, and I admit that in the past group classes totally intimidated me. So what did I do? I found my local rec center and bought a pass. For me the small workout space and pool access were a perfect fit. And during the months when the weather is warm I will walk, hike, or bike. It’s important to decide what works best for you and do exactly that.

Make it Fun:

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, exercise does not having to be boring (I promise). There is something out there for everyone, so find what you love. Want to get fit and feel some Zen bliss? Try yoga. Are you into pushing yourself and love a sense of competition? Cross Fit may be just the thing for you. Do you want to get up and dance every time you hear a catchy beat? Try Zumba or one of the many other dance-based fitness programs.

Find a Friend:

A great tip for keeping up fitness motivation is to find a workout buddy. It can be a friend, family member, coworker, or significant other. Having another person to workout with will keep things more fun and keep you accountable. Also, you can cheer each other on and celebrate achieving goals together.
